Information about intermediate resources (IRs)

According to section 301 et seq. of the Act respecting health services and social services, an intermediate resource is a natural or legal person (individual or corporate entity), other than an institution, that owns or rents out one or more living environments.   A service contract links an IR to a public institution designated as such by the Agency.

An intermediary resource houses users who conform to specific admission criteria and are already registered with a public institution, which maintains responsibility for the users housed in the IR.  The IR provides a living environment suited to the users’ needs, together with support or assistance services, in an effort to keep users within the community or to integrate them into it. For information on IR admission criteria, please contact your Health and Social Services Centre (CSSS).

For more information about setting up an intermediary resource (IR), please refer to Ouvrir une résidence pour personnes âgées (available in French) and Guide de mise en oeuvre d'une ressource intermédiaire pour les personnes en perte d'autonomie liée au vieillissement (available in French).

To obtain information concerning a residence outside the Montreal area, contact the Agence de la santé et des services sociaux that serves the area where the residence is located.
