profile of the population

Montreal’s population has many of the characteristics of a large urban centre and is in many respects unique in Quebec. Social and demographic data show that the population of Montreal is aging at a faster rate than the population of the rest of Quebec and is also more ethnically diverse. Even though Montrealers have grown increasingly educated, poverty is deeper here than in the rest of Quebec and wealth, like poverty, is distributed unequally throughout the area. These and other social and demographic features of Montreal life influence Montrealers’ health and well-being, which continues to improve although significant socioeconomic inequalities remain.
