There are also three university institutes in Montreal, namely, the Institut de cardiologie de Montréal (vascular medicine and cardiology); the Institut universitaire de gériatrie de Montréal (geriatrics) and the Centre jeunesse de Montréal (youth and violence). A hospital centre may be designated as a university institute for just one of its medical disciplines. In addition to providing basic hospital services, university institutes participate in medical education in their discipline, provide specialized and ultra-specialized medical services, or services linked to family medicine, and, like CHUs, evaluate health care technology and manage a research centre or institute. According to an Act Respecting Health Services and Social Services, a hospital centre may also be designated a university institute if:
Finally, there are six affiliated university centres (CAUs) on the Montreal territory, i.e., Hôpital du Sacré-Coeur de Montréal, Hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont, the CSSS de Bordeaux-Cartierville—Saint-Laurent, the CSSS Cavendish, the CSSS de la Montagne and the CSSS Jeanne-Mance. In addition to carrying out activities inherent to the basic mission of a hospital centre, CAUs help train health and social service professionals, and take part in research activities. The mission of a residential and long-term care centre (CHSLD) is to offer services, on a temporary or permanent basis, to adults, particularly elderly persons, who, by reason of loss of functional or psychosocial autonomy, can no longer live in their natural environment . Rehabilitation centres serve persons with a mental impairment, persons with a motor, visual or hearing impairment, persons suffering from alcoholism or other problems of addiction, and young persons and mothers with adjustment problems.
