INTERREGIONAL INTERPRETERS BANK
Requesting an interpreter’s services

Allophone population

Persons who do not have a command of French or English must contact their establishment, organization or institution — not the Interregional Interpreters Bank — to obtain the services of an interpreter.

If the establishment, organization or institution considers the request admissible, it calls a person assigned at the Interregional Interpreters Bank to request the services of an interpreter.Health and social service institutions can also send requests electronically via Jérôme. If an interpreter is available, he/she will contact the establishment, organization or institution directly to find out details about the meeting.

Depending on the nature of the request, the interpreter will either be present or work over the phone. The establishment, organization or institution in question will be billed. In no case must the allophone client be made to pay the interpreting costs.

Establishments, organizations or institutions may contact a person assigned at the Interregional Interpreters Bank, Monday to Friday, from 8:30 to 12:00 noon and 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. They may leave a voice mail message at any time.

For more information, read our document Tips on working effectively with an interpreter.

Requests by an establishment, organization or institution for the services of an ASL interpreter

The establishment, organization or institution must call a person assigned at the Interregional Interpreters Bank to request the services of an ASL interpreter .Health and social service institutions can also send requests electronically via Jérôme. The establishment, organization or institution gives the person assigned at the Bank the customary information as well as the deaf person’s name and the name and address of the place where the meeting will be held.

The person assigned gives the relevant information to the available interpreter, who is then responsible for asking the establishment, organization or institution for any additional information, if necessary. The requesting establishment, organization or institution will be billed for the service. In no case must the deaf anglophone client be made to pay the interpreting costs.

Policy – Fees for use

For face-to-face appointments the minimum charge is for two hours of service. If the institution reserves the services of an interpreter for more that 2 hours, it is billed for the block of time reserved.

By telephone, fees are calculated by 15-minute periods.

Mileage is billed for services provided outside the island of Montreal.

Reservations that are cancelled less than 48 working hours before an appointment are billed at the regular rate. Fees are payable even if cancellation is due to an unexpected event or emergency.

All fees for services are paid in full to the interpreters.

The Agence de la santé et des services sociaux de Montréal takes care of coordination and administration expenses. However, 10 % is added to the bill to help pay part of these costs (PST and GST not included).
