Definition

Chlamydiosis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. It is the most prevalent STI in Canada and particularly affects young people aged 15 to 25.

If left untreated, chlamydiosis can lead to serious complications in women such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). In addition to causing abdominal pain, fever and internal abscesses, PID increases the risk of ectopic pregnancy and premature labour, and can cause infertility. Chlamydiosis can also make men sterile.
