Recovery of used syringes
Context
Every year, community groups distribute a million syringes to help prevent the spread of STBBIs (sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections). Most of these syringes are properly recovered because they are discarded in needle disposal containers provided for that purpose. Nevertheless, a small percentage of syringes end up in the street or on private work premises.
CSSS occupational safety team (SAT) nurses can't go out to every workplace to teach workers how to recover, handle and dispose of dirty syringes found on the premises. They also have to teach people what to do if they are accidentally pricked by a needle.
That is why the Direction de santé publique (DSP) of Agence de la santé et des services sociaux de Montréal has produced an educational video for workers and employers:
- How to recover and handle dirty syringes
- How to dispose of dirty syringes
- What to do In the event of an accidental needle prick
