Are you looking for a family doctor?
Your CSSS can help you find a family doctor. Contact your CSSS if you:
- are over 70 years old;
- are suffering from a chronic disease (high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer, etc.);
- are pregnant; or
- have just been discharged from the hospital and need medical follow-up.
You will be answered by a nurse, who will determine what needs to be done to respond to your request.
If you don't meet any of the conditions listed above, ask a relative. Some doctors are willing to see or take on members of the immediate family (spouse and children) of their patients.
If you don't have a family doctor, go to your regular clinic or one of the network clinics.
Avoid making unnecessary trips by calling the clinic before you go. If possible, always go to the same clinic. The medical team will have access to your records and will be able to offer you better long-term care. You can also ask to see a doctor without having an appointment, and then ask the doctor if he or she would agree to become your family doctor.
Do you need specialized medical care?
Unless the circumstances are exceptional, medical specialists only see patients referred to them by another doctor. If you think that you need to be seen by a specialist, you will have to speak with your family doctor if you have one, or to a general practitioner (GP) at a walk-in medical clinic.
If your doctor gives you an emergency referral, he or she will make sure that you know where to go. If the referral is not urgent, your doctor or a member of the clinic's staff will give you the contact information of hospitals or clinics you'll have to call to make an appointment. Calling for the appointment will be your responsibility.
