Homelessness

Homeless does not have to mean helpless!
A few facts about homelessness
Homelessness is a growing cause for concern in Montréal. No longer limited to the downtown area, it has spilled over into a number of the city's neighbourhoods.
According to the last count of homeless people done by the Institut de la statistique du Québec in 1998, there were 28,214 people who had been to a shelter, soup kitchen or a day centre in Montréal, 12,666 of whom had been without a fixed place of residence for the preceding 12 months.
Physical and mental health problems, alcoholism, drug addiction, prostitution and isolation are very much part of the day-to-day reality of the homeless. Most homeless people are men, but the number of homeless woman is on the rise. The homeless population is getting younger and there are more and more indigenous members in its ranks.
A team specialized in working with the homeless operates out of the CSSS Jeanne-Mance (website in french only). To report a specific problem or get more information on the services available, call 514 527-2361.
