Working to improve living conditions

Social inequalities are important determinants of health
Three households out of 10 were living below the low-income cut-off on the Island of Montréal in 2001 and 12% of the population was subsisting on employment insurance in 2005. One third of Montréal families with children under the age of 18 are living in poverty, among them a little more than half of the city's single-parent families and nearly a quarter of families with two parents.
Economic and social disparities in Montréal often translate into other inequalities and differences in health care and outcomes.
There are a number of organizations dedicated to helping needy individuals and families to improve their living conditions.
