A family medicine group (GMF) is a group of doctors who work closely with nurses in an environment that is conducive to the practice of family medicine.
Family doctors who practice in GMFs also work closely with colleagues at the Integrated University Health and Social Services Centre (CIUSSS) and in hospital centres and pharmacies, as well as with other health professionals in your region.
GMFs are central to Quebec's strategy to facilitate access to family doctors.
How to register with a GMF
Registration with a doctor who belongs to a family medicine group is voluntary and free of charge. All you have to do is fill out a registration form, available at the office of any doctor who belongs to a GMF.
Registration is valid for one year and renewed automatically, unless you specify otherwise in writing.
However, registration ends if you change doctors or if your doctor leaves the group he or she belongs to. In the latter case, the doctor will notify you of his or her decision, and you'll be able to register with another doctor in the same group who is accepting new patients, or with a doctor from another group.
