This page contains information about the role of the health and social services network with asylum seekers in Montreal.
Involvement of the health and social services network
The health and social services network is responsible for meeting the clinical needs of people seeking asylum at Quebec's borders. This mission also includes temporary accommodation until asylum seekers receive their first assistance cheque.
Role of PRAIDA
The Regional Program for the Settlement and Integration of Asylum Seekers (PRAIDA), which is part of the CIUSSS du Centre-Ouest-de-l’Île-de-Montréal, addresses the needs of asylum seekers in the Quebec territory as per section 80 of the Act Respecting Health Services and Social Services by providing health and social services to asylum seekers who are in the process of claiming refugee status.
PRAIDA services begin once the person who is claiming refugee status has the official document issued by a border agent or by immigration services that identifies the person as an asylum seeker. PRAIDA then evaluates the asylum seeker, provides referrals, and addresses the person’s psychosocial and medical needs.
Role of the CRMUSCSU
The Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux has given the Coordination régionale des mesures d'urgence, sécurité civile et liaison avec les salles d'urgence (CRMUSCSU), which is part of the CIUSSS du Centre-Sud-de-l’Île-de-Montréal, the authority to deploy its civil protection coordination measures to support PRAIDA in helping asylum seekers.
The CRMUSCSU works with its civil protection partners to identify temporary accommodation that is sufficient for the number of asylum seekers who arrive every day. It also works with the health and social services network to find staff (such as social workers and nurses) to support asylum seekers in the process of claiming refugee status and provide them with the necessary health care and psychosocial support.
